The Diamondbacks overcame a substantial ninth-inning deficit against the Padres Saturday, managing to secure a dramatic, last-minute victory in Phoenix.
The final score was 8-7, but San Diego had built a comfortable lead, 7-3, in the top of the ninth and were seemingly on the way to a win.
Arizona changed all that, exploding for five runs against Robert Suarez, including a walk-off fielder’s choice to score hero Geraldo Perdomo and end the game.
Three consecutive Arizona batters, Pavin Smith, Gabriel Moreno and Alek Thomas, all singled to load the bases. Ketel Marte then beat out a ground ball to shortstop Xander Bogaerts for a single, scoring Smith and shrinking the Padres’ lead to 7-4.
Perdomo delivered the big blow with a line drive triple to right field, clearing the bases to tie it up. The end came when Josh Naylor hit a grounder fielded by first baseman Luis Arraez. Perdomo raced in from third and managed to slide under the tag by catcher Elias Díaz.
The Padres challenged the play, maintaining that Perdomo was out, but replay officials upheld the call on the field, ending the game and giving the D-backs the victory.
It was a sudden, disappointing end for the Padres, who looked like the better team for much of the day, and had managed to gain the lead behind big hits in the seventh by their two best players.
The first momentum shifter was when Fernando Tatis Jr. came to the plate with the bases loaded and the Padres down 3-1. He hit a ground-ball single, driving in Gavin Sheets and Jake Cronenworth, to tie the game 3-3.
Manny Machado then hit a double to score Díaz and Tatis, giving San Diego a 5-3 edge.
The Padres increased their lead in the ninth when Brandon Lockridge singled on a ground ball to shortstop Perdomo that was deflected by pitcher Kevin Ginkel.
Díaz scored on the play, which put Machado and Tatis in scoring position. Bogaerts delivered on a sacrifice fly to Thomas in center, sending Tatis in.
The insurance runs gave San Diego a 7-3 lead heading into the bottom of the ninth, when they had a 98.7% probability of winning, according to MLB Advanced Media. But the Diamondbacks defied those odds for the improbable victory.
The other scoring came in the second and fourth innings.
Sheets connected for a solo home run deep into right, his 12th of the season, to give San Diego a 1-0 lead. Then in the fourth, Arizona’s Eugenio Suárez belted his 20th homer of the year to left with two men on base, allowing the Diamondbacks to surge ahead 3-1.
The Padres, at 38-31, are in third place in the National League West, just ahead of Arizona with a 36-34 record.
Next up, the Friars try to avoid the sweep in a 1 p.m. matinee matchup. San Diego then heads back to Southern California for a four-game series in Los Angeles.
Notes: Outfielder Jackson Merrill left the game in the seventh after an attempted double steal. He was dazed after taking a tag from Marte off the top of his head … outfielder Jason Heyward, who’s been on the injured list with a left oblique strain since May 24, began a minor league rehab assignment with Triple-A El Paso on Friday. Heyward, 35, went 0-of-4 at the plate yesterday and grounded out twice with two strikeouts. Prior to the injury, he had posted career lows with the Padres, hitting .172.
