Syria reopens airspace for civil aviation

The Syrian General Authority for Civil Aviation announced today, Saturday, June 14, that Syrian airspace has been fully reopened to civil aviation traffic.

In a statement published on its Facebook page, the authority stated that the conditions that necessitated the temporary closure of some air corridors in the past have ended.

According to the authority, Syrian airspace is now considered “safe” and available for use according to international safety standards, confirming that all air corridors, including those connecting Syrian airports to the international corridor network, are open for civil aviation traffic.

The authority noted that the situation in the region will be continuously monitored, clarifying that additional measures will be taken if necessary to maintain the highest levels of safety and security in Syrian airspace.

Earlier, on Friday, June 13, the head of the Syrian Civil Aviation Authority, Ashhad al-Salibi, announced the temporary closure of Syrian airspace, as he stated to the Syrian News Agency (SANA).

The temporary closure of Syrian airspace was part of precautionary measures taken by the authority to ensure the safety of Syrian civil aviation amidst current regional developments, following the reciprocal shelling between Israel and Iran.

Al-Salibi stated that this measure was part of a careful follow-up on the developments in the air situation in the region, clarifying at the time that the authority would reassess the decision upon the completion of the specified duration, with the possibility of extending it or reopening the skies according to what “safety requirements” dictate.

He urged airlines and citizens to follow the updates issued by the authority, emphasizing that the safety of travelers and flight crews is a priority for the Civil Aviation Authority.

The Syrian Airlines Corporation also suspended all flights to and from the United Arab Emirates and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia due to the temporary closure of Jordanian and Iraqi airspaces as a result of current tensions in the region.

The Jordanian Civil Aviation Regulatory Commission announced the temporary closure of Jordanian airspace and the suspension of all incoming and outgoing flights as a precautionary measure amid the military escalation between Israel and Iran.

Meanwhile, the Iraqi Air Navigation Services Company announced the complete closure of Iraqi airspace and the suspension of aviation movement at all airports, indicating that the decision came in order to ensure the safety of travelers in light of the ongoing security tension in the Middle East.
