Two Minnesota state politicians have been the victims of a shooting, with one dead and the other injured.
Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark were shot and killed this morning, in an incident which Minnesota Governor Tim Walz has labelled as a “politically motivated assassination”.
In a second attack, US Senator John Hoffman and his wife were shot multiple times, but are thought to be recovering after undergoing surgery.
Walz said: “This was an act of targeted political violence. Peaceful discourse is the foundation of our democracy. We don’t settle out differences with violence or at gunpoint.”
He also paid tribute to Ms Hortman, saying “our state lost a great leader”.
Police in the US said a “large scale” manhunt for the suspect was underway.
