Mother appears in court after son hit and killed by truck; Demonstrators call for charges to be dropped

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — A hearing date has been set for Cyonna Badger, the mother whose 7-year-old son died after being hit by a U-Haul truck in Greece last July.

Badger appeared in Monroe County Court on Friday morning. Outside the courthouse, people demonstrated to call for the charges to be dropped.

Badger is charged with criminally negligent homicide and endangering the welfare of a child. Police say she was walking her son, Hakeem, and other children across West Ridge Road during a green light when the crash happened. The Monroe County District Attorney’s Office says it has video evidence to support the charges but couldn’t get into specifics.

“We do have evidence that fully supports these charges. This was an incident that was captured on video, so we do feel that with this tragic situation that these charges are appropriate,” Assistant District Attorney Janna Jehlen said.

Demonstrators held up signs in support of Badger, including one that read “Rochester’s roads killed Hakeem, not Cyonna”. Demonstrators said there’s no reason for the charges, which add additional trauma to losing a child. On Wednesday, people also gathered outside the Hall of Justice in downtown Rochester in support of Badger, writing messages in chalk.

Badger’s hearing is scheduled for Wednesday, July 2. She has been downgraded from supervision to pretrial release. There’s another protest against the charges scheduled for Tuesday, June 24.
