Grant Frerking, a former Tennessee football player, is accused of being involved in multiple financial scams while working as a consultant to UT head coach Josh Heupel, according to a report Thursday by KnoxNews.com.
A walk-on wide receiver for the Volunteers from 2017-22, Frerking also worked for On3 as president of On3’s NIL University and director of athlete network development from Aug. 2021 until May 27, 2025. His employment with the Nashville-based media company overlapped with his work at Tennessee.
On3’s founder and CEO, Shannon Terry, stated in a social media post on Wednesday that the company was aware of allegations made against an unnamed former employee and had “a zero tolerance policy for blatant violations of its internal standards and values.” According to KnoxNews, the company severed ties with Frerking amid “allegations of criminal misconduct.”
Terry then stated in a post on Thursday that On3 had no prior knowledge of Frerking’s relationship with the Vols, that he had been explicitly told not to do business with the program or its collective, and that he had repeatedly denied involvement with the school when questioned.
A spokesperson for UT told KnoxNews that Frerking hasn’t done any recent work on campus and that his contract, which expires June 30, would not be renewed. UT paid him $7,500 every 6 months for consulting work over the last 2 years. The school claims it doesn’t owe him any more money and that the last payment was on Jan. 1.
At Tennessee, Frerking advised Heupel on off-field matters, did consulting work for staff members on NIL best practices, and represented the Vols football program at public events.
His contract, which was obtained by KnoxNews, listed several public-facing duties: aiding in future development of the UT program by speaking on panels and attending events such as The Paul Finebaum Show, “guiding communication efforts” with external parties and partners to ensure program success, and “maintaining a presence on campus monthly” to meet, guide, and assist with players, staffers, and other people associated with the UT program.
According to KnoxNews, Frerking has also been referred to as a Tennessee booster who has made undisclosed financial donations to the athletic department. He has also previously served on the board of one of the school’s early NIL organizations.
Frerking has been accused of fraudulently collecting payments from customers who believed he was representing Metro Straw, an Atlanta-based lawn supply business. According to KnoxNews, Frerking hasn’t been associated with the company for several years. He has also been accused of borrowing money from former Tennessee teammates without paying them back.
KnoxNews also reported that Frerking was evicted from 2 Nashville apartments this year and owed $16,387 in unpaid rent
