In the wake of his death on June 11, the world has learned that Brian Wilson's influence went far beyond the beach. Many musicians from all walks of life paid tribute to the late Beach Boys producer and creative leader, a man widely regarded as a musical genius. And it seems that Wilson's impact made it from the surf and the sand to clubs like CBGB's and 924 Gilman Street.
At first, the clean-cut imagery of the Beach Boys might not seem like it'd mesh well with the spikes, leather and mohawks of punk rock. But underground rockers have always gravitated to the band's music. The Ramones ("Surfin' Safari"), The Jesus & Mary Chain ("Surfin' U.S.A."), and Sonic Youth ("I Know There's An Answer") are just some of the groups that covered the Beach Boys in the past.
And Green Day'sBillie Joe Armstrong is adding his name to the list. On June 12, hours after learning that Wilson passed, Armstrong posted his rendition of the Beach Boys' 1964 hit, "I Get Around." In the Instagram post, the punk rock legend wrote, "Thank you, Brian Wilson."
"I recorded a cover of 'I Get Around' a few years ago," he added. "Never got to share it. One of my all-time favorite songs ever."

Armstrong's rendition is a lovingly faithful tribute. The "American Idiot" singer's vocals echo the original so closely that fans were demanding a whole Beach Boys tribute album ("Green Boys? Beach Day?") in the comments section.
"THIS IS SO GOOD PLS PUT THIS ON STREAMING," demanded another. "Your voice really suits the Beach Boys' sound," said another enamored fan. One punk rock parent wrote, "According to my 7yo, who is both a Beach Boys AND Green Day fan, it sounds 'just like 'em, except a little bit punker!'"

Though it came from the Beach Boys' sixth album, All Summer Long, "I Get Around" was the group's first song to reach No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Armstrong's fellow '90s icon, Dave Matthews, also paid tribute to Wilson with a touching rendition of "God Only Knows" from the band's Pet Sounds. Before his performance, Matthews spoke about the protests going on in Los Angeles.
Funny enough, Armstrong also weighed in on the demonstrations.
