Over the past 30 years, Pixar Studios has earned a well-deserved reputation for their first-rated animated movies, many of which have gone on to earn significant critical acclaim among mainstream audiences worldwide.
Maintaining their taut hold over the animation industry, Pixar has produced no shortage of fantastic original movies, from early franchises like Toy Story and Monsters, Inc. to more recent successes like Soul and, most recently, Elio.
Fortunately, the world-renowned animation studio has no plans to slow down in the immediate future, with Pixar formally announcing production on a brand-new project: the existential comedy drama, Gatto.
Set against the winding streets of Venice, Italy, Gatto will follow a black cat named Nero as he reflects on the meaning behind his previous lives. Striking up an unlikely friendship and hoping to put his criminal past behind, Nero soon embarks on a journey of self-discovery, hoping to finally obtain a semblance of meaning in his lives before it's too late.
With Pixar announcing the project at the recent Annecy Animation Festival in France, the studio also revealed key details behind the film's production. Perhaps most importantly, Pixar confirmed that Luca director Enrico Casarosa will oversee the movie's direction, with Andrea Warren attached as the movie's producer.
The formal announcement drew massive applause from the audience in attendance, with Pixar also unveiling the movie's projected release date of 2027.
If that weren't exciting enough, Pixar also discussed several equally exciting films currently on the horizon. In particular, DisneyPixar's Chief Creative Officer Pete Docter confirmed that Joan Cusack will return to voice her tough-talking Western cowgirl, Jessie, in Toy Story 5.
Additionally, the company also drew significant attention for airing advanced footage of their upcoming film, Hoppers: a science fiction comedy a group of scientists able to "hop" their consciousnesses into the bodies of lifelike robotic animals. The film is currently expected to arrive in theaters on March 6, 2026.
