US Open 2025 prize money: Payout breakdown as champion to take home more cash than Masters and PGA Championship winners

The US Open is here, and golf’s best are battling a tough course at Oakmont in hopes of a major win, while earning millions as well.

Bryson DeChambeau won this major last year, and he’s now defending his crown against the likes of Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy.

Things have already proven to be very difficult in Pennsylvania, and it’s making even the best players in the world have to fight to stay in contention.

All of the effort will be worth it if you can come out on top though, with a massive pot of money ready to be handed out.

DeChambeau walked away with over $4million for his success last year, but what is the prize on offer for the 2025 tournament?

The total prize pot for the US Open this year is $21.5m.

That is the same amount as it was at the 2024 tournament, which was and still is a record-breaking sum of cash made available at a major championship.

The winner of the US Open will take home $4.3m again.

McIlroy claimed just shy of that reward for winning the Masters earlier this year, while Scheffler was handed $3m for winning the PGA Championship.

Runners-up at the US Open will receive just over $2m.

Third claims $1.5m, and fourth is the final place to earn over the million mark.

Fifth and sixth at Oakmont will take home $840,000 and $740,000, respectively.

Speaking about the prize money on offer, USGA CEO Mike Whan said: “Our purse is $21.5 million. Winner’s check is $4.3m. We didn’t raise our purse this year.

“When I started at the USGA just four years ago, our purse was $12.5m, so I feel comfortable that we’ve been a leader in moving fast and bigger.”

He added: “We want to be relevant. We understand the competitive set. We know that this probably isn’t really about the money for the person who [wins on Sunday].

“But at the same time, we want the money to be commensurate with the achievement.”
