Has had the habit of winning then placing out of the top five in succession in his last six runs.
But he’s constantly capable of bouncing back next time, seemingly getting used to his new weight after the initial rise from the handicapper from winning well.
Wasn’t entirely out of it either last time when upped 5lb for his Musselburgh victory and a return to 7f seems to also be the key for what should be another good run.
His poorer performances this season have both been tough big field contests over 1m so this is all very encouraging and he’s a massive each-way price too.
Absurde
You can make fairly compelling arguments for most of these horses in this race.
However, Absurde showed last time out that despite placing in third has all the makings of going well next time out.
He was only thwarted by Illinois, a great long distance runner for Aidan O’Brien.
He returns to York for the first time since winning the Ebor, over course and distance, in August 2023.
Absurde also won under Danny Tudhope at Chester last year and actually has solid form on the flat recently.
Al Qareem may struggle giving away 5lb in total to this Willie Mullins-trained horse, where it was only 3lb last time out when just getting ahead of him to chase down Illinois.
Classic
Gone well since being gelded and ran really well here in this race last year to place a neck second when 16/1.
He’s now rated 5lb lower than that run and he can often go well here at Sandown when the going is good.
In fact, his last victory may have been a while ago (July 2023) but it also came here over 7f and appeals a lot looking to be on the up again while also being helped with Ryan Moore on board.
Town And Country
Given 5lb from Coto De Caza and 3lb from Star Of Mehmas but realistically should be rated higher than her current mark.
It should always be noted when Henry De Bromhead sends out a flat runner in Britain as it is a rarity.
Though his strike rate isn’t anything to shout about in that regard, this horse changes things.
The filly placed just a head behind First Instinct while also finishing ahead of higher-rated horses like 113-rated Babouche and 104-rated Grande Marques.
That run essentially confirmed that her second place behind Bodhi Bear was in fact promising and as a result her 11lb rise in the weights isn’t surprising.
Triple Double A
Frankies Dream won by a short head over 7f at York in May against 21 rivals and has only been upped 4lb for that victory.
That came after being upped a total of 7lb from some wins and close placings in his previous five runs and should continue to improve until the handicapper catches up with him.
However, the step up into Class 2 company could be tough against these top-rated rivals.
And Triple Double A provides a big each-way price that looks too good to pass up under Grace McEntee for trainer Hugo Palmer.
The gelding has gone up 20lb since his seasonal debut and then went fifth of 12 when 28/1 in a huge step up in class from 5 to 2 last time out.
There’s got to be more to come from this horse and goes well on good to firm and good so this looks like he could spring a surprise.
