Team India players were left numb during a training session at Beckenham after news of a devastating Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad on Thursday, June 12, which claimed 241 lives. Although the session was optional, players and staff appeared visibly shaken, with many murmuring about the tragedy, reported RevSportz journalist Rohit Juglan.
A London-bound Air India flight, AI171, crashed shortly after taking off from Ahmedabad. The Boeing 787-8 was carrying 242 people, including two pilots and ten cabin crew members. According to Reuters, it is the deadliest aviation tragedy across the world in the past ten years.
The plane crashed into a residential neighborhood close to the airport. Among the victims was former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani. Notably, authorities confirmed that one person survived the crash.
Indian players took part in a training session on the eve of the four-day intra-squad match in Beckenham, set to begin Friday. Only batters hit the nets, while fast bowlers from both the senior and A squads skipped practice.
The session also included focused slip-catching drills, with Karun Nair, KL Rahul, Shubman Gill, and Yashasvi Jaiswal forming the cordon.
However, the atmosphere remained subdued following news of a devastating plane crash in Ahmedabad. The usual chatter and laughter were absent as players maintained a quiet, professional demeanor.
The crash reportedly injured 50 to 60 medical students when the plane struck a doctors' hostel. According to the BBC, five students remain unaccounted for, and at least two are in critical condition in the ICU.
