The crash happened just before 6 a.m. Monday in the 1500 block of Fruitdale Avenue near Corlista Drive, according to San Jose police spokesperson Stacie Shih.

An investigation determined a motorcyclist was traveling westbound on Fruitdale when a driver traveling southbound on Corlista made an illegal U-turn into the motorcyclist’s path, Shih said.

The motorcyclist suffered major injuries in the collision and was taken to an area hospital. The driver, meanwhile, left the scene before officers arrived, according to Shih.

Detectives identified the driver and arrested him Wednesday in San Jose, Shih said. He was booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail on a charge of felony hit-and-run.

He is being held on $25,000 bail at the Elmwood Correctional Facility, jail records show.

A friend of the victim, Jessi Martins, is raising funds to help him recover from his injuries. On a GoFundMe page, Martins said the victim has a broken neck, a shattered wrist, a punctured lung and “most heartbreakingly he cannot feel his legs or fingers.”

“He is alert and responsive, but the road ahead is uncertain,” Martins said. “This was a life-changing injury, and the fight to regain even the smallest function will be long, painful and incredibly expensive.”

Martins said her friend was on his way to work when the collision happened. Her friend, Martins added, is “the definition of heart,” an avid ice hockey player and a lover of nature.

“He is the most positive person you’ll ever meet and right now he’s facing the hardest challenge of his life,” Martins said.
