‘He snapped me’ – Louis Tomlinson jokingly demands apology from talkSPORT host

Louis Tomlinson jokingly demanded a donation from Gabby Agbonlahor as payback for injuring him in a charity match back in 2013.

The One Direction star is set to take part in Soccer Aid on Sunday, live on talkSPORT, where he will line up alongside the likes of Wayne Rooney, Paul Scholes and Gary Neville for England at Old Trafford – while boxing legend Tyson Fury will be Rooney’s assistant coach.

Tomlinson previously starred in the annual UNICEF fundraiser in 2016, where he was part of a victorious England team.

And the music star is sure to have much fonder memories of this experience compared to another exhibition game he has featured in.

That is because, when taking part in a 2013 charity match for Stilyan Petrov’s foundation, Tomlinson was left in a heap by none other than talkSPORT host Gabby Agbonlahor.

The fixture was at Celtic Park to raise money for Petrov‘s charity after his battle with Leukaemia.

But Agbonlahor, who had been a teammate of the Bulgarian’s at Aston Villa, made sure there was some competitive edge to the game, when he smashed into Tomlinson with a heavy challenge.

It left the 1D icon writhing on the ground in agony, and he later vomited on the side of the pitch shortly after half-time.

This didn’t go down well with Tomlinson’s army of fans, as Agbonlahor was later targeted by One Direction lovers on social media.

And the boyband star hasn’t forgotten his run-in with the Villa legend 12 years later, as he joined talkSPORT Drive live from Soccer Aid training to look ahead to the eagerly-anticipated event.

When he was reminded of Agbonlahor’s social media slaughtering afterwards, Tomlinson joked: “I enjoyed that!”

He then grinned before addressing the talkSPORT presenter: “I’d accept an apology in the form of a donation to UNICEF.

“I think that’s the right thing to do, right?”

Continuing to make Agbonlahor feel guilty, Tomlinson added: “A proper one, he earns a few quid doesn’t he?”

While the musician joked about the incident, he revealed the challenge actually ruled him out for several weeks, preventing him from lining up for Doncaster Rovers’ reserves, side, who he had joined on non-contract terms in August 2013.

He admitted: “He did snap me though! Honestly!

“I was actually meant to be playing in a reserve game for Donny Rovers about a month afterwards and it put me out of that game.”

Agbonlahor has also shared his side of the story, previously opening up on the infamous challenge on talkSPORT Breakfast in 2022.

Tomlinson joked he would forgive Agbonlahor for his 2013 challenge if he made a charitable donation

The one-cap former England international revealed his antics led to Celtic icon Henrik Larsonn, who was also on the pitch that day, demanding he apologise for the tackle.

He began: “I think because he’d been drinking the night before in the hotel, obviously he was a bit hungover so he was sick by the side of the pitch. Martin O’Neill wasn’t happy!

“But I remember after the game, Ally, I got a good telling off from Henrik Larsson!”

“He was like: ‘You have to apologise, come on, you don’t do that’.”

“I was like: ‘Sorry mate I didn’t mean to’. It was a charity game, yes, but you don’t lose that edge do you?”

“Yeah, well he wasn’t happy. I was like: ‘Calm down, Henrik’.”

Gabby Agbonlahor could soon have some paying up to do

Opening up on the backlash he later received, Agbonlahor explained: “I was getting death threats off teenage girls: ‘How dare you touch my Louis Tomlinson?’

“I was like, ‘right let’s get out of here, Glasgow Airport, let me escape in one piece!”

Tomlinson will certainly hoping to come away injury-free this weekend, as he joins an England team managed by boxing superstar Tyson Fury.

His side look to beat a World XI boasting former Euro 2020 winner with Italy, Leonardo Bonucci, as well as Nemanja Vidic, Edwin van der Sar and Carlos Tevez.
