The world’s leading concertmasters and premiere musicians will return to San Diego next week for the annual Mainly Mozart All-Star Orchestra Festival — the largest celebration of Mozart’s music in North America.

This year’s festival, which runs from June 18 to 28, will feature musicians from some of the nation’s top orchestras, such as the New York Philharmonic, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony and Philadelphia Orchestra.

Internationally acclaimed conductor Michael Francis returns for his 11th season as music director, leading six different performances across two venues, The Conrad Prebys Performing Arts Center and UC San Diego’s Epstein Family Amphitheatre.

“I think concertgoers, whether they are committed classical music lovers or new to classical music, are going to find this year’s offerings particularly appealing and accessible,” CEO and co-founder of Mainly Mozart Nancy Laturno said.

She explained that this year, the festival is focused on presenting a broader selection of Mozart’s works. This includes the addition of a 30-minute pre-concert performance and Mozart-themed talk with pianist Anton Nel at The JAI, part of the Prebys center, held before each show.

This event is free for all AA-tier ticket holders and subscribers.

Additionally, the festival will open with a special performance of the recently rediscovered Serenade in C Major – a Mozart composition believed to have been written when he was around 10 to 13 years old.

Found in a German library last September, the three-string piece will be performed by a distinguished ensemble of concertmasters, including David Kim of the Philadelphia Orchestra, Nurit Bar-Josef of the National Symphony and Jeff Thayer of the San Diego Symphony.

“We want the same thing for all of the people who are attending, and that is to come and have a great time,” said Mainly Mozart communications director Mark Laturno, who is Nancy Laturno’s son. “Our hope is that we’re presenting something to the community that will enrich lives and touch people in a special sort of way.”

Some of the other changes this year include food and drink being allowed at Saturday’s outdoor concert at the Epstein amphitheater – guests are invited to bring their own picnic spreads. While outside alcohol is not permitted, alcoholic beverages will be available for purchase.

Single ticket prices for concerts at The Conrad range from $65 to $149, while tickets for performances at the Epstein Family Amphitheater are priced between $25 and $149. Subscription packages are also available.
