A former star from Malcolm in the Middle has been working hard on something quite impressive off-screen. Erik Per Sullivan, who played Dewey in the series, decided not to join the rest of his co-stars in the show reboot that is in the works. Instead, his co-star revealed that Sullivan is attending Harvard University and pursuing a master's degree.
Fellow Malcolm in the Middle co-star Bryan Cranston shared the news about Sullivan during an appearance on Dana Carvey and David Spade'sFly on the Wall podcast on June 11.
Cranston touched on Sullivan's decision not to join the show revival and explained his reasoning. "He's actually going to Harvard." Cranston added, "He's really, really smart...I think he's getting his master's at Harvard right now."
"I talked to Erik and I said, 'Hey, we got the show! It's going to come back," Cranston recalled of the conversation he had with Sullivan. He noted that Sullivan said the news was "fantastic," and Cranston voiced his excitement over bringing Sullivan back alongside him.
However, Cranson noted, Sullivan said, "Oh no, no, I don't want to do it. But it's fantastic."
As E! News shared, Sullivan stopped acting a few years after Malcolm in the Middle ended. He stepped away from Hollywood in 2010. Cranston recalled Sullivan telling him, "Oh God, no, I haven't acted since I was 9 or something. So, I'm not into it."
Sullivan is the only main original cast member who has chosen not to return for the Malcolm in the Middle revival. Frankie Muniz, who played Malcolm, is returning, as are Cranston and Jane Kaczmarek, who played mom Lois. Christopher Masterson and Justin Berfield return as the older brothers.
Dewey will still be around, according to E! News. Actor Caleb Ellsworth-Clark is stepping into the role.
Fans of Malcolm in the Middle took to Reddit to share their thoughts on Cranston's update on Sullivan.
"I loved Dewey...but it's good to imagine he's a child star that turned out okay," one Reddit user shared.
"The way Bryan describes it is like an uncle checking in on their kid. I love how much he seems to love his co-workers," another Redditor suggested.
"The guy did a great job playing that character. More power to him for moving on and doing his own thing in life though. I'd say anyone who was fond of the show wishes him nothing but the best out of gratitude for all the laughs back in the day too," read someone else's Reddit comment.
