ROCHESTER, N.Y. – While it may already feel like summer in Western New York, the official start of the season, according to the astronomical calendar, is still a little over a week away. This year, the summer solstice occurs on Friday, June 20 at 10:42 PM EDT, marking the beginning of summer in the Northern Hemisphere.
The summer solstice is the moment when the Sun’s direct rays reach their northernmost point, shining directly over the Tropic of Cancer. It represents the longest day of the year in terms of daylight. After this point, the Sun most direct rays gradually begin to shift southward, and daylight hours slowly decrease. Earlier in the year, the spring equinox took place, when the Sun’s rays were directly over the Equator, giving nearly equal amounts of day and night across the globe.
Looking ahead to the summer season, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has issued its seasonal outlook for the months of June through August. While this is not a specific forecast, it provides a general sense of what weather patterns are more likely based on current climate indicators.
The outlook suggests that much of the United States, including New York State, has an increased probability of experiencing above-average temperatures. For precipitation, drier than normal conditions are expected across much of the western U.S., while the East Coast, including Western New York, has a higher likelihood of receiving above normal rainfall. This continues the trend of a wetter than usual spring in the region.
Regardless of how the weather plays out, summer in Western New York is an important time. It is a season to enjoy, before cooler days return.
