Yograj Singh, never one to mince words, has laid down a challenge for the new generation of cricketers who lit up the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. Speaking exclusively to InsideSport, the former India pacer and father of Yuvraj Singh praised young talents like Vaibhav Suryavanshi but made it clear that true greatness comes through Test cricket.

14-year-old Suryavanshi, who startled everyone at the age of just 13, emerged as one of the tournament’s most exciting prospects. Under the tutelage of Rahul Dravid, the Bihar-born talent blazed away superbly. According to his childhood, he may represent India in just two years as well.
“My vision is Test cricket. Can you survive five days? That’s the real test,” Yograj told InsideSport. “50 overs – fair enough. 20 overs – fair enough. I don’t go by these formats. But since they (formats) are there, you should be fit enough to play all three formats. Why do you struggle? Because you are only concentrating on T20, IPL and 50 overs. Aj toh 50 overs bhi nahi khel sakte hum log (Today, we cannot even play 50 overs.) “That’s the way we are.”
Yograj’s message alludes to the fact that budding cricketers should be wooed away with the glamour of IPL cricket. Instead, they should look forward to making themselves a well-rounded cricketer, dominating all three formats. There’s a reason why even someone like Virat Kohli, who gave it his all to win the IPL trophy, kept it five levels below Test match cricket.
Also, Yograj took a dig at some coaches and administrators working under “AC” and taking calls on cricket. Whereas former cricket-turned-coach, credited himself for toiling hard in his cricket academy in Chandigarh to produce more cricketers.
“All the coaches and all the administrators want to sit in the air conditioning and do things. Here, I am under 48 degrees Celsius, having a passion to produce more brilliant cricketers like Yuvraj Singh.”

Few names drew as much attention in IPL 2025 as Vaibhav Suryavanshi. Picked by Rajasthan Royals for INR 1.10 crore, many saw him as a long-term project. Instead, injuries to the likes of Sanju Samson and Nitish Rana fast-tracked his debut. What followed was nothing short of remarkable. He took the IPL stage with aplomb, smacking international pacer Shardul Thakur for a gigantic six in his very first ball.
Suryavanshi scored 252 runs in just seven games at a staggering strike rate of 206.55—the highest by any batter with more than three innings in the season. While his century against the Gujarat Titans broke age records, it was his composed 57 off 33 balls against the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) that showed his maturity as well.
But for all the headlines, the teenager is grounded. “Next year, I will work on areas where I made mistakes and try to do much better for the team,” he said after the season.
