Virat Kohli’s unexpected decision to retire from Test cricket left the entire cricket world stunned. Virat Kohli made the shocking announcement just a few days before the BCCI was set to reveal India’s squad for the upcoming five-match Test series against England.
Kohli, who is one of the greatest players of this generation, shocked the cricket world with his retirement from Test cricket, especially given his fitness and not-so-poor form. However, he has been consistent for the last two crucial Test series, but still nobody wanted that big surprise.
Former India spinner Harbhajan Singh believes that the former Indian captain still had a few more good years left in him and could have continued playing red-ball cricket for a few more years. The Rajya Sabha MP called it a personal decision but stressed that Kohli still has a lot left in him.

The World Cup winner, who also played under Kohli’s captaincy for India, further noted that the dashing right-handed batter has the strength and stamina to continue playing red-ball cricket before cheekily saying he even can play now.
Harbhajan Singh was quoted as saying by ANI, “It is his personal decision; what can I say? Dum-kham toh bande mein bahut hai. He can play even longer. I can play as well.”

Virat Kohli's Test journey
Kohli’s journey in Test cricket has been nothing short of iconic. Making his Test debut in 2011 against the West Indies, the Delhi lad went on to become one of the most consistent and dominant batters in the traditional format of the game. He is also one of India’s most successful captains ever.
Over 210 innings, Kohli piled up 9,230 runs, including his highest score of unbeaten 254. With 30 centuries and 31 fifties to his name in 123 matches, Kohli stands as India’s fourth-highest run-scorer in Test history. Australia was his favorite opponent, as he scored a massive 2,232 runs against them.
The year 2018 was his golden phase, where the former Indian skipper tallied 1,322 runs, and it was his best performance in a single year. However, the past few years were not just about matching the caliber of Virat, and just before the England tour, he decided to move on from the longest format.

Virat Kohli's Test retirement could have been handled better: Ravi Shastri
Meanwhile, Ravi Shastri has recently raised questions about how Virat Kohli’s Test retirement was managed by the BCCI and head coach Gautam Gambhir. The former India head coach said the BCCI could have handled the situation more carefully, with better communication.
Shastri also shared that if he were in charge, he would have made Kohli the captain again after the 2024-25 Border Gavaskar Trophy in Australia.
Ravi Shastri said on Sony Sports, “I feel sad that he's gone the way he has—suddenly. I think it could have been handled better, maybe with more communication. If I had anything to do with it, I would’ve made him captain straight after Australia. Virat has announced his retirement from Test matches, which is sad, you know, because he's a great player. A great player.”
