Despite his stunning triumph at Roland Garros, Carlos Alcaraz won’t be able to keep all of his prize money.
The Spaniard came from two sets down to beat Jannik Sinner in an epic men’s singles final at the French Open.
Their match lasted a whopping five hours and 29 minutes, which made it the longest French Open final in history.
Thanks to his exploits on Court Philippe-Chatrier, Alcaraz took home a cool €2.55million (£2.13m) in prize money.
However, the five-time major winner is expected to see far less of the seven-figure sum in his bank account.
That’s due to the taxation laws for tennis players.
Players will pay tax in the location they won their money, no matter their nationality.
But it also means they do not have to pay income tax on their earnings when they return to their respective home countries.
The local tax rate in France is estimated to be around 30 per cent mark, meaning Alcaraz will lose approximately £639,000.
It means his final prize money amount from the French Open will be around £1.49m.
Alcaraz’s victory has also taken his career earnings to the £33m mark, which places him seventh on the all-time list of tennis players with the biggest earnings.
He has now leapfrogged American icon Pete Sampras, who collected an estimated £32m before he stepped off court for the final time in 2002.
Alcaraz will take home less money from the French Open than he first anticipatedGettyAccording to the ATP website, Alcaraz has pocketed £5m this year alone thanks to his four titles and 37 wins from 42 games on tour.
But he still has some way to go if he is to enjoy his richest year to date, which stands at £11.2m in 2023.
Despite raking in the cash thanks to his constant on-court success, Alcaraz is not the type to spend his earnings lavishly.
“Maybe not after every big win, but for example, at the Grand Slams, if I reach the semi-finals, I like to buy myself a new pair of sneakers,” Alcaraz told the Tennis Channel ahead of the French Open.
“If I feel like I had a good season, at the end of the year I’ll buy myself a nice watch.”
Alcaraz won’t have to wait long to add some extra weight to his wallet and trophy cabinet as the Spaniard is in the draw for the Queen’s Club Championship in London.
The Spaniard is seeking his third-straight Wimbledon crownGettyThe 22-year-old is the highest seed in the men’s singles tournament, with fellow top ten stars Taylor Fritz, Jack Draper, Lorenzo Musetti, Alex de Minaur, Holger Rune and defending champion Tommy Paul all in the field as well.
The men’s singles at Queen’s begins on June 18.
