It's been roughly four years since Scarlett Johansson portrayed the reformed covert agent-turned-veteran superhero Black Widow in an MCU project. In the years since, however, the 40-year-old Marriage Story actor continues to remain tied to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, even when she seems ready to leave the franchise behind.
Sitting down for a recent interview with Stranger Things' David Harbour for Interview Magazine, Johansson and Harbour discussed the latest MCU venture, Thunderbolts, as well as Johansson's involvement in the project.
When asked if she'd seen the film, Johansson replied that she hadn't, prompting Harbour to reply, "Okay. You are an executive producer on it. Congratulations."
Johansson quickly responded by pointing out how her actual involvement in Thunderbolts' production was non-existent, telling Harbour, "I asked to have my credit removed because I wasn't involved."
In the past, Johansson had been a keep player in the original iteration of the MCU. Making her debut in 2010's Iron Man 2, Johansson went on to reprise the role of Natasha Romanoff eight more times in the decade that followed.
Serving as a main character in such Marvel films as The Avengers, Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Avengers: Endgame, Johansson's character ultimately met her fate near the climax of Endgame, sacrificing herself to ensure the Avengers' victory over Thanos.
Interestingly, in spite of her on-screen demise, Johansson later reprised her role for a long-awaited spin-off project with 2021's Black Widow. A prequel to the events of 2016's Captain America: Civil War, it also marked the final time Johansson portrayed the character in the MCU.
Looking back at her time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Johansson had surprisingly mixed feelings about her tenure in the series, telling Harbour, "In some of the other films, the cast was so enormous and there was so much plot to serve that you start to feel like you're a device to move it along. And if you're committed to five and a half months of that, it's like, 'Okay. I can't paint my nails, I can't get a haircut.'"
