Waste accumulation threatens health of al-Kashkiya residents in Deir Ezzor

Deir Ezzor – Obadah al-Sheikh

The accumulation of waste in al-Kashkiya town in eastern Deir Ezzor creates an unhealthy environment, as it attracts insects and rodents and contains dead animals, posing a risk to the health and safety of its residents.

According to residents interviewed by Enab Baladi, the accumulation is caused by the random disposal of garbage by neighboring municipalities near the train bridge and the cemetery. They are demanding urgent intervention and radical solutions, either from the Autonomous Administration controlling the area or from relevant organizations.

Mohammed al-Ali, a schoolteacher from the town, stated that waste has become a common sight and is not a new issue; it is a result of years of neglect and careless disposal of waste.

He added to Enab Baladi that the lack of designated waste disposal sites or adherence to safe disposal standards has turned areas near residential gatherings into random dumps that pose a threat to public health.

He noted that foul odors spread constantly, especially during periods of high temperatures, making “life in the area unbearable,” pointing out the dangers of organic material decomposition and the numerous odors that can lead to respiratory problems, especially for children and the elderly.

Mrs. Ahlam al-Khadar, a resident of the town, shared the same complaint, urging immediate intervention from humanitarian organizations and relevant authorities to find a permanent solution to the waste problem and provide designated disposal sites away from residential areas.

    25 patients monthly

Omar al-Mohammad, the director of al-Kashkiya health center, told Enab Baladi that haphazard waste disposal in rural areas leads to the spread of epidemics, such as leishmaniasis, which currently affects about 25 people monthly in the towns of Abu Hamam and al-Kashkiya, in addition to skin diseases and respiratory illnesses like asthma.

He added that the water lacks sufficient levels of chlorine, which exacerbates waterborne diseases, noting a shortage of essential medications like glucantime, used to treat leishmaniasis, which was previously distributed for free.

A member of al-Kashkiya municipality (who preferred to remain anonymous as he is not authorized to speak to the media) stated that the municipality is aware of the magnitude of the problem and its challenges, but it faces limited resources in providing alternative locations or adequate equipment for waste collection. Additionally, there is a lack of awareness among some residents who dispose of waste indiscriminately.

He mentioned that the crisis is not limited to al-Kashkiya and its al-Hawi neighborhood, but is widespread in many rural areas that lack the necessary infrastructure for waste management, considering that the solution lies in a comprehensive waste management plan that includes designated sites, sorting stations, and recycling projects, which requires substantial budgets currently unavailable.

Piles of waste and garbage are spread across cities and countryside in Syrian geography, creating breeding grounds for pests and insects such as mosquitoes and flies, and stray animals like rats, cats, and dogs. This has now become a source and focal point for epidemics and diseases, adversely affecting both humans and the environment.
