Something spicy has marched into Ocean Beach.
A unique restaurant recently debuted on Newport Avenue, featuring wings and ribs layered in a homemade variety of special sauces — the first of its kind in the United States.
“What makes our boneless wings and ribs so special is the sauces,” said Wing’s Army co-owner Fidel Rivas Diaz.
“We produce all 23 of our sauces from natural ingredients that range in varying degrees of heat. Three sauces are very hot, but most are not. We also have flavors that are sweet and mild. We are very clear on our menu, which is which.”
Wing’s Army has won numerous international awards for its sauces, contributing to the restaurant’s growing popularity in Mexico, where the restaurant began.
“We opened our first Wing’s Army restaurant 22 years ago in Guadalajara, Mexico,” said Diaz. “For 22 years, Wing’s Army has been one of Mexico’s most popular restaurants, and now we have opened our first in the United States, here in Ocean Beach.”
When asked why they picked Ocean Beach to introduce their brand to America, Diaz smiled and said, “OB has a good vibe.”
Diaz was quick to recognize the community’s unique personality, and he knew OB was a good match and an excellent place from which to launch Wing’s Army into other beach communities.
As you might expect, the newest resident on Newport will have a menu offering typical beach favorites such as wings, ribs, burgers, fries, and beer.
“We serve beer from all over,” said Diaz. “We have our brand, Army Beer.”
Wing’s Army is in the former Starbucks building, which is sporting a new look. The outside is painted in G.I. green, paying tribute to the U.S. Army, and inside the theme continues with a mural of soldiers in a chow line carrying a tray full of wings.
