AN aspiring football star was killed at age 16 after a tragic incident last Friday.
Xyere Brooks died in hospital hours after he was shot at a house in Camden County, New Jersey.
Brooks played high school football at Kipp High School.
He had caught the eye of universities such as Rutgers and Syracuse.
Police responded to reports of gunfire at a home, Camden County Prosecutor’s Office said.
According to cops, there were multiple juveniles at the property at the time.
Police say Brooks was shot around 12.30pm in an apartment block on Thorne Street.
He was rushed to Cooper University Hospital, where he died two hours later.
An investigation into the incident is underway and the prosecutor’s office issued a short statement.
It read, “No criminal charges have been filed at this time.
“This investigation is active and ongoing.
“No further information will be released at this time.”
Brooks’ brother Manazh Tompkins spoke to 6ABC about the shooting.
He said, “She put the gun to his head, and I guess she didn’t expect it to go off.
“To make a long story short, the gun went off on my brother, and he’s no longer here with us.”
Brooks’ school sent a heartfelt message on Instagram after news of his death.
They said he had “a smile that could light up a room, a competitive spirit, and the kind of energy that brought joy to every hallway and dance battle.”
The statement added, “Xyere was a committed student, a loyal and encouraging teammate and friend, and a standout football player whose talent and drive were evident to all who knew him.
“Xyere will be deeply missed by everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.”
Brooks’ head coach said he was the best running back in his class.
“There’s no way he can be replaced,” head coach James Tompkins said.
“We are going to take it one day at a time and do the best we can to honor him, support his family and the rest of the team.”
