California AG: Trump has endless desire to seize more power

California Attorney General Rob Bonta (D) accused President Trump on Monday of displaying an "endless desire to seize more power" with his response to the ongoing protests in Los Angeles against the Trump administration's immigration crackdown.

"That's his end goal, to seize more power that he doesn't have," Bonta said during an appearance on MSNBC's "The Weeknight." "That's why he calls things emergencies that aren't emergencies, why he calls things invasions that aren't invasions. Because he wants to exercise authority that would only be triggered if there really were an invasion, an emergency, a rebellion when there's not."

"The through-line is he's hypocritical and he is unlawful in his endless desire to seize more power," Bonta added.

Trump ordered thousands of National Guard troops and Marines to respond to the escalating protests that followed Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) workplace raids in California on Friday. Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) objected to the troop deployment, and the state is now suing the Trump administration.

The president told reporters on Sunday that the military involvement was necessary to protect ICE agents and maintain "law and order."

"If we see danger to our country and to our citizens, we'll be very, very strong in terms of law and order. It's about law and order," he said.

But Bonta, Newsom and other Trump critics have accused him of escalating the situation.

"It's very clear what the president is doing," Bonta said in the MSNBC interview. "He wants a fight; he wants this to erupt."

"There's probably nothing more he'd like to see than to see some violence provoked by the unnecessary deployment of military on American soil," he added.
