Apple to roll out new passport feature on phones – but travelers face rules on how they can use it

A NEW feature roll out will switch up how US Apple users approach airport travel.

But you will want to read up on the restrictions surrounding the update before flying.

Apple recently announced the upcoming update to its digital wallets.

iOS users will soon be able to create a digital ID using their passport.

The update will be available this fall when the new iPhone operating system is rolled out.

It will give the user the ability to create a digital version of their passport in their Apple Wallet.

An Apple spokesperson spoke about the update at the brand’s 2025 keynote event.

“While not a replacement for your physical passport, digital ID can be used for domestic travel and at supported TSA checkpoints,” they explained.

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) confirmed that a digital passport will be accepted at security screenings for domestic travel.

However, travelers will still need to present their physical passport at customs and border checkpoints when traveling internationally.

So even if you have a digital passport in your Apple Wallet, you will still be required to carry the physical document when traveling outside of the country.

The update comes after the Real ID ruling came into effect last month.

This law saw many travelers double-checking if their driver’s licenses were compliant.

If not, an alternative form of ID, such as a passport, is now required to board domestic flights.

However, not all states have had to comply with the updated requirement.

There are five states where you don’t have to worry about applying for a Real ID.

And a little-known card can help you get through TSA checkpoints without the new documentation.

    Applying for a REAL ID

The process varies by state, but residents will need a few documents to apply for a REAL ID before the deadline.

No matter the state, the application process can be started online by scanning and uploading the necessary documents, basic information, and Social Security numbers. Once submitted and reviewed, an in-person visit to the DMV or your state’s department agency is necessary for an attendant to verify the documents.

From there, a thumbprint will be recorded in the system, and a photo will be issued for the ID before it’s mailed.

The documents needed are those that show:

Full legal name (previous driver’s license, passport, etc) Date of birth (like a birth certificate, or an official copy of one) Social Security number (Social Security card) Two proofs of residence (like a utility bill or voter registration card) Lawful status

As well as driver’s licenses and passports, there are a variety of other forms of identification accepted at TSA checkpoints.

These include a US passport card, DHS trusted traveler cards (Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI, FAST), and a US Department of Defense ID, including IDs issued to dependents.

Or you can present a permanent resident card, a border crossing card, or an acceptable photo ID issued by a federally recognized Tribal Nation/Indian Tribe, including Enhanced Tribal Cards (ETCs).

Other permitted forms of ID include: a HSPD-12 PIV card, a Canadian provincial driver’s license or Indian and Northern Affairs Canada card, Transportation worker identification credential, a U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Employment Authorization Card (I-766), a U.S. Merchant Mariner Credential, and a Veteran Health Identification Card (VHIC).

And of course, foreign government-issued passports are also accepted.

Apple revealed it will also be refreshing digital boarding pass options within the Wallet app.

And the brand will set out to improve the overall travel-centric features of the app.
