Bhubaneswar: As the BJP government in Odisha celebrates its first anniversary, Biju Janata Dal President and Leader of Opposition Naveen Patnaik launched a scathing attack, accusing the state government of multiple failures.
Addressing the state-level BJD meeting and Jana Jagaran Abhiyaan at Sankha Bhawan, Naveen said, “The BJP claims to be a people’s government, but the people are not with them. Long speeches and big advertisements do not bring development.”
Naveen alleged that under the BJD regime, 90% of people benefited from free healthcare through the BSKY scheme. However, after the BJP implemented the Ayushman Bharat scheme, people are struggling to access medicines or free treatment. “Thousands, including the elderly, cancer patients, and children, are suffering. Healthcare has completely collapsed,” he said, pointing out that 19 districts currently lack Chief District Medical Officers (CDMOs).
The BJD’s Mission Shakti empowered 70 lakh women, becoming a mass movement and setting a national record. Naveen accused the BJP of undermining this initiative over the past year. “Mothers are not getting business support, and their work is stalled in government offices. Women who visited Dubai and Singapore are now disheartened, their confidence shattered. They will not forgive the BJP,” he warned.
Naveen criticized the BJP for failing to curb corruption, a key election promise. “They said there would be no ‘cut and commission’ if they came to power, but it continues unabated. Farmers are at the mercy of millers, who no longer fear the government,” he said, adding that the BJP has halted all ongoing development works.
Highlighting the BJD’s achievements, Naveen noted that when the BJD took over in 2000, Odisha was burdened with a ₹18,000 crore debt and ran on overdrafts. By 2024, the state had a surplus revenue of ₹45,000 crore. “Now, the BJP government is drowning in record debt,” he said. He also pointed out that poverty in Odisha dropped from 63.83% in 2005-06 to 11.07% in 2020-23 under BJD rule, with over 1 crore people lifted above the poverty line. Maternal and infant mortality rates were also significantly reduced.
Naveen asserted that the BJD has always stood with the people and urged party leaders and grassroots workers to continue serving them. “The BJP claims to be a people’s government, but the people are unhappy,” he concluded, vowing to hold the government accountable.
