On Tuesday, June 10, the 29-year-old West Indies National Cricket Team superstar batsman Nicholas Pooran dropped a bomb to shock the entire cricket world.
Nicholas Pooran announced his retirement from international cricket and said that he made the shocking decision after "much thought and reflection".

Pooran is the highest run-getter for the West Indies National Cricket Team in T20I cricket. He is also the most-capped player in T20Is for the Men In Maroon and only the second West Indies player after Kieron Pollard to play over 100 T20Is for the country.
He represented the West Indies National Cricket Team in 106 T20I matches and scored 2275 runs at an average of 26.14 and a strike rate of 136.39, with 13 15-plus scores. Notably, he is the only player to score 2000-plus T20I runs for West Indies.
He never played a Test match in his career but featured in 61 ODI matches, scoring 1983 runs at an average of 39.66 and a strike rate of 99.15, with three tons and 11 fifties. Pooran also captained the West Indies but won just 8 games out of 30 across T20Is and ODIs, before stepping down from the role.
His retirement comes as a major surprise to the cricket world and a big blow to the Cricket West Indies (CWI). The left-handed batter is in the form of his life and has a plenty of cricket left him to offer to his country.
The West Indies are currently struggling at the international level, and Pooran could have played a key role in the team's revival in ODIs and T20Is, but the batter has abandoned his team.
Pooran was recently seen in action in the Indian Premier League 2025 for the Lucknow Super Giants, where he had a good season and flexed his six-hitting ability.
After the IPL, he made the decision to skip the ongoing West Indies tour of England 2025 and requested CWI for a break, which was granted to him.
Why Nicholas Pooran retired from international cricket
Nicholas Pooran's decision to retire from international cricket at the age of 29 is most likely due to his shift in focus to the global T20 leagues worldwide.
He is one of the top performers in 20-over cricket and is in high demand across all the T20 leagues, including the IPL, MLC, The Hundred, SA20, CPL, ILT20, and others.
Due to his international commitments with the West Indies, he might have been forced to miss some of the leagues, but with his retirement, that won't be the case, and he can participate in all the league matches.
However, in a retirement message shared on his official Instagram handle, Nicholas Pooran didn't reveal the exact reason behind his move and just wished the West Indies National Cricket Team luck for the future. He elaborated:
"After much thought and reflection, I've decided to announce my retirement from international Cricket."
"This game we love has given and will continue to give so much - joy, purpose, unforgettable memories, and a chance to represent the people of the West Indies. Wearing that maroon, standing for the anthem, and giving everything I had each time I stepped on the field... it's hard to put into words what that truly means to me. To have led the team as captain is a privilege I will always hold close to my heart."
"To the fans - thank you for your unwavering love. You lifted me in the tough moments and celebrated the good ones with unmatched passion. To my family, friends, and teammates - thank you for walking this journey with me. Your belief and support carried me through it all."
"Though this international chapter of my career closes, my love for West Indies Cricket will never fade. I wish the team and the region nothing but success and strength for the road ahead."
