Comedy Legend, 56, Joins the Cast of Star Trek

Comedian Patton Oswalt has joined the cast of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds for its upcoming third season.

The trailer for Season 3 shows Oswalt, who is seemingly playing a Vulcan complete with pointed ears and the species' signature eyebrows, interacting with Spock (Ethan Peck). During the brief interaction, an always deadpan Spock tells Oswalt's character to "give [him] five." After he gives Spock a high-five, the science officer commands him to "now [go] down low" while lowering his hand. Before Oswalt's character can make contact with Spock's hand, he pulls away.

"Why would you do that?" asks Oswalt's Star Trek character.

"Because you are too slow," replies Spock seriously.

After the trailer was released on June 7, several Star Trek fans shared their excitement for Oswalt, who has starred in projects like The King of Queens and Ratatouille, joining the franchise in a Reddit thread.

"Patton being on Star Trek makes me so happy," wrote a commenter.

    "It feels... right," agreed another.

"I hope we get more Vulcan Patton Oswald episodes. He has to hit 3 episodes to beat Sarah Silverman's 2-part episode record of a comedian acting in Star Trek. Edit: Tig [Notaro] has left them all in her space dust with several seasons of Disco," added another person.

The upcoming third season will feature an episode where several of the Enterprise crew is turned into Vulcans for a mission. During a July 2024 interview with Variety, Peck shared his thoughts about his co-stars also playing Vulcans.

"It was kind of a shock to see them as Vulcans because I know them so intimately, having worked with them for several seasons so to see them in Vulcan makeup with really surprising and endearing. I had a surprising sense of this is family, because I have been so sort of isolated as a Vulcan on the show," said Peck during the interview.

He then referenced that Spock is half Vulcan, meaning his character still felt like an outsider during the episode.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3 premieres on July 17.
