Ontario Beach Park fights prompt safety concerns among Rochester locals

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Another fight broke out at Ontario Beach Park Saturday evening, marking the second brawl in five days at the popular summer destination.

“There’s nice festivals here but, I just avoid it…like the plague. I’d rather just not be apart of it. There’s just a lot of unsupervised people hanging out without their parents it seems,” said Chris Hilbert, who was having a beach day with his son on Monday.

Around 6 p.m. Saturday, a crowd of teenagers gathered in the park area. By 7 p.m., more teens arrived and small groups broke off into fights. Video from the scene shows the large number of people involved.

“I would avoid the park at nighttime just because I don’t wanna risk anything but I mean anytime during the day I’m alright. But yea, I wouldn’t come here right before close or anything just because I’m a little too nervous about that sort of thing,” said Anthony Socha, who was walking his friend’s dog.

Many beachgoers expressed similar sentiments, saying they enjoy the beach’s beauty and activities but only feel comfortable visiting during the day.

The park is patrolled by the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, while the parking lot and roadways fall under the City of Rochester’s jurisdiction and are patrolled by police. Despite being a county park, its location within city limits grants both agencies enforcement authority in the area.

Local businesses have also been impacted by the recent violence. Haley Evarts, General Manager at Bill Gray’s, said they’ve adjusted their closing time from 10 p.m. to 9 p.m. on weekends in response to the fights.

“We now close at 9, so that everyone can get out faster in their cars and away from what’s going on down here,” Evarts explained. “But it has affected our business because people see it happening and they just wanna leave because they don’t know what’s gonna happen after the fight starts..if someone’s gonna pull out a gun or it’s gonna escalate to something that no one wants to be around.”

Police say they’re meeting with both New York State Police and Monroe County Sheriff’s Office to finalize plans for increased law enforcement presence at the beach.
