The US Open Facts and Stats to Know

We dive into the 2025 U.S. Open at Oakmont through a series of facts and stats. The year’s third major tournament has provided a trilling history of champions and records.

The world’s best golfers coming together at the U.S. Open is always highlight on the calendar, and it’s a perfect 10 for this year’s host – Oakmont Country Club in suburban Pittsburgh.

The 125th edition of the U.S. Open will be held at Oakmont for the 10th time, or three more than the next-highest host, Baltusrol Golf Club.

A field of 156 golfers (see all the world’s best in our golf leaderboards) will be challenged by Oakmont’s 7,349-yard track (par 70). Bryson DeChambeau is the defending champion.

Following are 2025 U.S. Open facts and stats to know heading toward the action, which begins Thursday and wraps up on Sunday (Father’s Day):

    ● Oakmont first welcomed the U.S. Open 98 years ago (1927), and it’s been held there in every decade since then except for the 1940s.

    ● Dustin Johnson won his first major title the last time the U.S. Open was held at Oakmont in 2016.

    ● Willie Anderson, Ben Hogan, Bobby Jones and Jack Nicklaus hold the record for the most U.S. Open wins with four each. Tiger Woods and Hale Irwin are one behind with three wins each.

    ● None of the last 16 U.S. Opens has been decided by a playoff – the longest run without a playoff in the four men’s golf majors. The last U.S. Open playoff in 2008 went past 18 holes at Torrey Pines, with Tiger Woods slipping past Rocco Mediate on the first hole of sudden death.

    ● Only one of the last 11 U.S. Open tournaments has been won with an even/over-par score: Brooks Koepka’s +1 at Shinnecock Hills in 2018. Six of the previous nine editions had produced an even/over-par winning score (from 2005-13).

    ● Since 2020, Scottie Scheffler has had more wins (three) and top-10 finishes at majors (14 in 20 appearances) than any other player. Following his win in the 2025 PGA Championship last month, he’ll aim to become the first golfer to win back-to-back major tournaments since Jordan Spieth in 2015.

    ● Scottie Scheffler’s first-ever major appearance was at Oakmont in the 2016 U.S. Open. He shot rounds of 69 and 78 to miss the cut by one stroke.

    ● Rory McIlroy’s first major title was the 2011 U.S. Open at Congressional. He’s the only player with a top-10 finish in each of the last six U.S. Opens (T9 in 2019, T8 in 2020, T7 in 2021, T5 in 2022, second in 2023 and second in 2024).

    ● Since Xander Schauffele made his U.S. Open debut in 2017, he’s had seven top-10 finishes in eight tournaments – more than any other player over that span. The exception was a T14 in 2022.

    ● Bryson DeChambeau will aim to join Ben Hogan, Curtis Strange and Brooks Koepka as the fourth golfer since World War II to win back-to-back U.S. Open tournaments. Last year’s title was DeChambeau’s second (the first came in 2020).

    ● Bryson DeChambeau’s last five majors on U.S. soil have seen him finish T6, second, first, T5 and T2.

    ● The 2016 U.S. Open at Oakmont was Jon Rahm’s first appearance at a major (he finished in a tie for 23rd and picked up the low amateur medal). A winner at Torrey Pines in 2021, the Spaniard will aim to be only the third non-U.S. golfer to win multiple U.S. Opens over the last 100 years, following South Africans Ernie Els and Retief Goosen.

    ● Shane Lowry’s best performance in a major championship played on U.S. soil was the 2016 U.S. Open at Oakmont. He finished in a tie for second, three strokes behind Dustin Johnson.

    ● Only Rory McIlroy (five) and Xander Schauffele (four) have had more top-10s at the U.S. Open since 2020 than Harris English (three). English tied for second at the PGA Championship last month – his best finish at a major.

    ● Three golfers are 10-under par or better across this year’s first two majors (the Masters and PGA): Scottie Scheffler (-19); Bryson DeChambeau (-13); and Harris English (-10).

    ● Brooks Koepka’s best finish in a major since his victory at the 2023 PGA Championship is a T17 at that year’s U.S. Open. His current run of eight consecutive majors without a top-10 is his longest career drought, and it includes a missed cut in each of the first two majors this year.

    ● Jordan Spieth has not had a top-10 finish in his last nine majors – his longest career drought. Since his 2015 victory at Chambers Bay, Spieth has only one finish inside the top 20 at the U.S. Open (T19 in 2021).

    ● The 2016 U.S. Open winner at Oakmont, Dustin Johnson has missed the cut in five of the last seven major tournaments. That’s as many missed cuts as in his previous 25 major appearances.

    ● Cameron Smith has missed the cut in a career-high three consecutive majors. He made the cut at the 2024 U.S. Open, but had a T32 finish.

    ● Wyndham Clark’s triumph in the 2023 U.S. Open at Los Angeles County Club is his only top-30 finish in 14 major tournament appearances.

    ● Since 2017, Tommy Fleetwood has had seven top-five finishes in majors. That’s more than any other golfer without a major victory in that span.

    ● Patrick Cantlay and Viktor Hovland are trying to become only the fourth golfer this century to win both the U.S. Open low amateur medal (2011 for Cantlay, 2019 for Hovland) and the U.S. Open title after Jordan Spieth, Jon Rahm and Matt Fitzpatrick. The U.S. Open is the only major in which Cantlay has always made the cut (9 for 9) and the only one in which Hovland has never finished inside the top 10.

    ● This year’s U.S. Open will mark Adam Scott’s 96th consecutive appearance at a major since the 2001 Open Championship, won by David Duval.

    ● A U.S. or European golfer has won 35 of the last 37 majors. The exceptions are Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama at the 2021 Masters and Australia’s Cameron Smith at the 2022 Open Championship.
