Popular plus-size clothing retailer Torrid said it could close up to 180 stores this year, or nearly 30 percent of its brick-and-mortar operations.
In the fashion company's recent Q1 investors report, CEO Lisa Harper explained that some 70 percent of the trendy clothing retailer's demand comes from online sales and throughout the second half of 2025, Torrid has a plan to rework its approach to better meet customers where they are.
The retailer confirmed store closures are on the way and could affect up to 180 locations, which Harper said have been "underperforming."

"We’re accelerating our transformation to a more digitally-led business, which includes optimizing our retail footprint," Harper shared in the June 5 announcement. "We now plan to close up to 180 underperforming stores this year—allowing us to reduce fixed costs and reinvest in areas that drive long-term growth, including customer acquisition and omnichannel enhancements."
"I’m proud of the strong progress we made this quarter across our strategic initiatives," Harper continued, noting, "the strategic and targeted acquisition and retention efforts," along with the support of its ever-popular loyalty program, will position Torrid for "efficient and accelerated top and bottom-line growth."
Harper said that despite the closures, the Torrid has seen "positive results, exceeding expectations" with its "sub-brand strategy." The company plans to "double down" on the momentum with the upcoming launches of Lovesick and Studio Luxe, suggesting sub-brands could represent one-third of Torrid's business by 2026.
