Danny Kanell wants to revamp the selection process for NCAA Tournaments across multiple sports.
Following a college baseball tournament that saw 13 SEC teams reach the field of 64, Kanell is calling for a cap on the number of teams from one conference that can reach the postseason.
“There needs to be a cap on how many teams from any one conference can play in the postseason. In every sport,” Kanell, a former Florida State quarterback, wrote on social media. “Letting teams in that are sub .500 in regular season conference play is ridiculous.”

That’s a pattern that has been seen in other sports as well, most notably men’s basketball. In March Madness this year, the SEC smashed the previous record for bids from one conference with 14 teams from the league making the field.
If Kanell’s proposal were to take effect, it would have eliminated several SEC teams from this season’s baseball and men’s basketball NCAA Tournaments. In baseball, Oklahoma and Kentucky would have both been ineligible for going under .500. It would have been a bigger list in men’s basketball: Mississippi State, Arkansas, Georgia, Vanderbilt, Oklahoma and Texas.
Of course, SEC frontrunner Florida ended up going on to win the men’s basketball National Championship back in April. The SEC had a rough start to the college baseball tournament, with just 4 teams reaching the Super Regional round. The College World Series begins next week in Omaha.
