Zach Root pitched a gem for Arkansas on Saturday in Game 1 of its home Super Regional against Tennessee, going 7 innings while allowing 1 earned run on 1 hit with 2 walks and 6 strikeouts.
Most importantly, Root’s 92-pitch gem helped Arkansas to a 4-3 victory to move 1 victory away from a trip to the College World Series. But unfortunately for Root and the Hogs, that wasn’t what many will remember about his outing against a bitter SEC rival.
What most who were watching on national TV will remember was Root absolutely going off on Tennessee’s Andrew Fischer after inducing Fischer into a 4-6-3 double play to end the sixth inning and preserve Arkansas’s 3-2 lead. Root didn’t just celebrate the huge double play. He turned toward Fischer, pointed at him, and berated him with some inflammatory language that wasn’t so suitable for a family gathering on a Saturday afternoon.

— Prospect Dugout (@prospectdugout) June 7, 2025Naturally, social media had a field day with Root’s offensive display of words and gestures. At the top of that list was Chris Peebles, whose son, Tennessee catcher Cannon Peebles, was suspended for the Super Regional opener after being ejected from last weekend’s regional final victory over Wake Forest.
Here was what Chris Peebles posted:
Tell me how the Arkansas pitcher is not tossed but my kid is in the locker room. Realize I am somewhat bias but not wrong. #ncaaoffiating
— Chris Peebles (@ChrisPeebles1) June 7, 2025This is what got Cannon Peebles tossed from his last game:

— Depressed New York Fan (@JudgeEnjoyer) June 3, 2025Meanwhile, these were some of the other reactions on social media from Saturday’s wild display by Root:
Root should be ejected
— Rural Vol (@RuralVol) June 7, 2025Honestly not sure how it can be justified that Root wasn’t ejected after that when Cannon Peebles got ejected for saying something while walking away from the opposing player. Root made a point to delay exiting the field to taunt Fischer.
— The Vol Bros (@thevolbros) June 7, 2025Zach Root screamed and pointed at Andrew Fischer after Fischer grounded into a double play. He turned and flexed at him after that.Tony Vitello, Josh Elander and Luke Bonfield want to know why nothing was done about it.
— Mike Wilson (@ByMikeWilson) June 7, 2025OK, so … everyone warned because Root absolutely lost his mind and is lucky to still be in the game?Do they think we don't have cameras, eyes and ears?
— Wes Rucker (@wesrucker247) June 7, 2025Imagine the crucification that would be happening if Root was wearing orange instead of red pic.twitter.com/EvtRXH4LPt
— Sam (@sthorn_23) June 7, 2025Disclaimer: I’m all for letting the kids playHowever we’ve seen players ejected and suspended for much less than this in a postseason college baseball setting.Zach Root was way overboard here. Warning both teams for this was a slap in the face to Tennessee. pic.twitter.com/Er1wTGi6ii
— Noah Bieniek (@NoahB77_) June 7, 2025If all of that wasn’t enough, keep in mind there will be at least 1 more game between these rivals on Sunday, and if Tennessee can force a Game 3, then they’ll clash again on Monday with a trip to Omaha on the line.
