Drivers fume over car ‘graveyard’ taking up 100 parking lot spots – models are perfectly new but they won’t budge

A CAR graveyard that’s filled with unsold Teslas taking up some 100 parking lot spots is causing issues for other drivers.

The EV firm, headed by Elon Musk, is under significant pressure from Michigan authorities after a host of unsold Cybertrucks were discovered parked at a shuttered shopping center.

Their place in the Farmington Hills lot is prompting concerns about violations of local zoning regulations.

Several local residents and social media users have posted images and videos showing rows of Cybertrucks lined up at Hunter’s Square shopping center on Orchard Lake Road.

Speculation is rife, with many believing the site, which is near a Tesla service centre in West Bloomfield, is being used as an overflow site to manage unsold inventory.

Some 100 vehicles have taken up the space, although Tesla employees speaking to CBS Detroit say the property is owned by the same party that manages the nearby service center.

Furthermore, they claim the vehicles are scheduled for customer delivery.

However, Charmaine Kettler-Schmult, the city’s planning and community development director, said: “The City of Farmington Hills code enforcement office has been in communication with the Hunter’s Square shopping center management to resolve the issue.

“They have been notified that storage of vehicles is not a permitted use.

“The enforcement process is being followed and takes time.”

In many ways, seeing hordes of Cybertrucks left unsold on a lot highlights the struggles the company has experienced with selling the unique EV.

Musk once dubbed the vehicle as a groundbreaking entry into the electric pickup market, but the brand has sold just over 6,000 Cybertrucks in the first quarter of 2025 .

This brings total deliveries to fewer than 50,000 units since its debut.

In 2024, Tesla delivered around 40,000 Cybertrucks – some 10,000 fewer than Wall Street analysts expected – while the brand originally projected annual sales could reach as high as 250,000 units by this year.

According to the NY Post, Tesla has since decided to scale back production of the truck.

Business Insider also revealed the brand had begun to reassign workers from the Cybertruck production line to its more successful Model Y operation in December 2024.

The Cybertruck has also been the subject of a series of recalls, with eight issued to date ranging from problems with faulty windshield wipers to delayed rear camera displays.

The most recent recall affected nearly 46,000 vehicles – virtually every Cybertruck sold to that point – due to concerns that a stainless steel trim panel could detach while the vehicle was moving.

This joins a wider problem for Tesla, who have seen sales slump amid widespread backlash over Musk’s active role as head of DOGE in the Trump administration.

This has seemingly sparked protests and acts of vandalism, as Tesla becomes increasingly polarizing.

    Tesla attacks

A series of attacks have targeted Tesla showrooms and vehicles starting in early 2025.

The FBI has started investigating the attacks as potential domestic terrorism.

The recent attacks have been linked to people protesting CEO Elon Musk and his work in Donald Trump’s administration.

    Some of the attacks include:

January 20 and February 19 – Tesla dealership in Salem, Oregon, attacked with Molotov cocktails and gunfire March 3 – Seven Tesla charging stations set on fire near Boston March 9 – Four Cybertrucks burned in a parking lot in Seattle, Washington March 18 – A Tesla service center is set on fire with Molotov cocktails in Las Vegas March 24 – Multiple bombs found inside a Tesla showroom in Texas
