Every blow traded as Trump and Musk’s break-up went nuclear

In just a few months Elon Musk has gone from donor, adviser and chief cheerleader for Donald Trump to his most vocal and scathing critic.

Musk spent more than $250m on Trump’s election campaign, appeared at campaign rallies, and spent election night at his Mar-a-Lago resort.

The tech billionaire, who is the world’s richest man, was appointed to lead a new Government department to cut out inefficiency and excess spending.

Then it all fell apart. Just over four months into Trump’s second term, the relationship has spectacularly imploded.

So how did it get to this?

After months of harmony between the two, Musk begins to break ranks on Trump’s economic policies.

In an interview with CBS News on 27 May, Musk first airs grievances with Trump’s signature spending bill, saying he was “disappointed to see the massive spending bill, frankly, which increases the budget deficit, not just decreases it, and undermines the work that the DOGE team is doing.”

Two days later, Musk announces his departure from the White House, saying it was “scheduled”.

As a “special government employee,” Musk is limited to a 130-day appointment.

On 31 May, Trump gives Musk a gold key to the White House as a leaving present during a farewell press conference in the Oval Office.

Musk says he looks forward to “continuing to be a friend and adviser to the president.”

On social media, he thanked Trump “for the opportunity to reduce wasteful spending”, saying that Doge’s mission “would only strengthen over time”.

3 June: Social media attacks begin

But it isn’t as harmonious as it seems. On 3 June, Musk launches a wave of attacks on Trump’s spending bill on his social media account X.

“I’m sorry, but I just can’t stand it anymore. This massive, outrageous, pork-filled Congressional spending bill is a disgusting abomination,” he writes.

“Shame on those who voted for it: you know you did wrong. You know it.”

He continues the criticisms the following day but are laughed off by White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt.

    5 June: The bromance explodes

The tensions erupted on Thursday 5 June when Musk creates a poll on X asking if people would support the creation of a new political party in the US that “actually represents the 80 per cent in the middle”.

“Without me, Trump would have lost the election, Democrats would control the House and the Republicans would be 51-49 in the Senate,” Musk claims. “Such ingratitude.”

Trump abruptly threatens to cancel Musk’s lucrative contracts with the US Government and says the tech billionaire has gone “crazy”.

“The easiest way to save money in our Budget, Billions and Billions of Dollars, is to terminate Elon’s Governmental Subsidies and Contracts,” he posts. “I was always surprised that Biden didn’t do it!”

Trump tries to present the split as his decision, saying Musk was “wearing thin”.

“I asked him to leave, I took away his EV Mandate that forced everyone to buy Electric Cars that nobody else wanted (that he knew for months I was going to do!), and he just went CRAZY!”

In the Oval Office, Trump tells reporters he is “very disappointed in Elon”.

A short time later: Musk makes Epstein claim

Later on Thursday, Musk makes a bombshell allegation about Trump’s relationship with disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein, who was convicted of sex trafficking and died in jail in 2019.

“Time to drop the really big bomb: @realDonaldTrump is in the Epstein files. That is the real reason they have not been made public. Have a nice day, DJT!”

Musk did not provide any evidence for his claim. The White House has been contacted for comment.

In February, the US attorney general pledged to release all of the information the government has on disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein – known as the “Epstein files”.

However, “Phase One” of the release of documents contained only phone-book contacts and flight logs, most of which have been available since 2015. No date has been set for releasing the remaining files.

He continues to post about Trump’s relationship with Epstein, reposting videos of the pair together at a party and a screenshot from a magazine interview in which Trump appears to calls Epstein a “terrific guy”.

Trump says in a post on his social media site Truth Social that “I don’t mind Elon turning against me, but he should have done so months ago”.

Musk says that “in light of the President’s statement about the cancellation of my government contracts, Space X will begin decommissioning its Dragon spacecraft immediately,” though he later backtracked.

Then: Musk backs calls for Trump’s impeachment

Musk shared a post calling for Trump to be impeached and saying Elon would “win” their battle.

“President vs Elon. Who wins? My money’s on Elon. Trump should be impeached and JD Vance should replace him,” the post said.

    “Yes,” Musk added.

Later in the night he reposted a meme showing the pair having an arm wrestle.

Musk claims that Trump’s tariffs “will cause a recession in the second half of this year”, and reposted something calling them “super stupid”.

He also shares a post about voters turning away from the Republican party, which says that Republicans will likely lose the House in 2026 and “Democrats will spend two years investigating and impeaching President Trump.”
