Friday sees the first day of the Derby Festival which sees the renewals of the two Group 1’s, the Coronation Stakes and the Oaks.
The card features superstars such as last year’s St Leger winner Jan Bruegal, this year’s 1000 Guineas winner Desert Flower and Musidora Stakes winner Whirl.
We have picked a trio of selections on the card including one in both of the Group 1’s and one in the opener.

1.30 Epsom – Hallasan 2.40 Epsom – Jan Brueghel 4.00 Epsom – Elwateen1.30 Epsom – Hallasan
It’s fair to say Hallasan has been well below par in his last two starts. He finished way back on his final start in Dubai in March and put in a similar performance when returning to the UK when making no impression in the Commonwealth Cup Trial at Ascot in April. Both times he was prominent early but failed to see out the trips of one mile at Meydan and then the sharp six furlongs at Ascot.
However, before that he had gone well, winning three races out of four, including a Conditions race at Meydan and the valuable Weatherbys Scientific £300,000 2yo Stakes at Doncaster in his last race as a juvenile.
The return to seven furlongs on slightly softer ground could bring about a revival as he won on Good to Soft at Nottingham last year and he has a massive opportunity to bounce back here if back on form.
2.40 Epsom – Jan Brueghel
Jan Brueghel was unbeaten as a three-year-old and that included two Group 3 victories and a narrow win in the St Leger. It came as a surprise when he fluffed his lines somewhat on his reappearance when finishing second in the Group 3 Alleged Stakes at the Curragh.
He was strongly fancied to get off to the perfect start this season, but things did not go quite right for him from the off as he was sweating up in the preliminaries and ran awkwardly throughout, hanging right in the closing stages. However, with everything that went wrong he was still able to finish second, so he clearly retains his ability, just possibly needs to be a bit calmer in the build up to a race.
He will be up against it with Calandagan looking a strong favourite, but the step back up in trip will suit him better and with a run under his belt he should go well.
4.00 Epsom – Elwateen
Elwateen has shown significant progress in her two career runs so far. A winner on debut, she was then not seen until the following season when finishing an impressive fourth in the 1000 Guineas, only two lengths behind today’s favourite Desert Flower. On that day she ran well in the early stages but looked to get outpaced towards the business end of the race so the step up in trip, while an unknown, should suit her.
While experience may be lacking for a race of this magnitude, she has shown that she has a lot of potential and her breeding suggests that the step up in trip will bring out the best in her. She is in good hands with Jim Crowley on board and she could spring a surprise here.
