On Air Today: Fighting for America’s National Parks, Against Trump Budget Cuts ...Middle East

chapelboro - News

Duke professor Anne Mitchell Whisnant joins Aaron to discuss her recent editorial on the possible impact of federal cuts on the National Park System – particularly the Blue Ridge Parkway, which is vital to the still-recovering economy of hurricane-hit western North Carolina.

Whisnant is an expert on the Blue Ridge Parkway: she’s the author of “Super-Scenic Motorway: A Blue Ridge Parkway History,” a deep dive into the parkway’s complex political history that was published by UNC Press in 2006. Whisnant’s book focuses on the Parkway’s contingent nature – we often think the parkway’s current layout was natural or inevitable, but it was actually the result of many pitched political battles that sometimes dragged out for years – and today, she says it’s important to remember the Parkway (and other national parks) aren’t guaranteed to be around forever, if we don’t continue to support them.
