Implenia to build rail tunnels under Frankfurt
Switzerland’s Implenia has won a €200m contract to build two rail tunnels under Frankfurt for German state rail infrastructure operator DB InfraGO.

The route will run from a new S-Bahn station at Konstablerwache in the city centre to Fechenheim in the north east.

The route will be part of the Nordmainische S-Bahn, a planned railway between Frankfurt, Hanau, and the town of Maintal.

Implenia will do initial excavation and construction for the S-Bahn station, drill two 1.2km-long tunnel tubes with boring machines, and carry out extensive water management measures.

Site specific foundation services are needed as work is being undertaken in densely populated areas.

“Maintaining and developing a functioning transport infrastructure is central to the sustainable development of our cities,” said Edwin Scherer, Implenia’s head of civil engineering.

Implenia is on track to complete detailed design by the end of 2025, with construction due to begin in early 2026 for a targeted completion in 2031.
