Rajeev Shukla breaks silence on succeeding Roger Binny as BCCI President

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Vice President Rajeev Shukla has opened up about growing speculation around taking over as the interim president after Roger Binny's tenure ends. Shukla downplayed the speculation, calling the transition a routine procedure within the cricket board.

On June 2, reports confirmed that Roger Binny will step down as BCCI President. Binny, who turns 70 on July 19, is required to vacate his position in accordance with BCCI’s constitution, which states that no person can hold any post after attaining the age of 70. The news gained attention on social media.

Rajeev Shukla said that media reports suggesting he will permanently replace Roger Binny as BCCI President are exaggerated. Speaking to ANI, Shukla stated that he will only assume temporary charge, as per the usual protocol when a position becomes vacant.

The 65-year-old urged people not to read too much into the speculation, adding that the second in command is given interim responsibility until new elections are held. Shukla said that the situation has been unnecessarily overhyped by the media.

“These are unnecessary reports. When a position falls vacant due to any rule, the second in hierarchy is given a temporary charge, interim charge for the same. So, that is what it is until the next elections. This has been blown out of proportion...There is no need to give it so much importance,” Rajeev Shukla said.

Rajeev Shukla Has Been Involved in Indian Cricket Administration for Many Years

It is worth noting that Rajeev Shukla has been involved in Indian cricket administration for many years. He was elected as the BCCI vice-president in December 2020, following a Supreme Court decision that allowed politicians to re-enter cricket governance.

Shukla served as Chairman of the Indian Premier League (IPL). He first took over the position in 2011. Although he briefly stepped down in 2013 amid controversies, he returned to the role in 2015.

If Shukla succeeds Roger Binny as BCCI president, he will be responsible for leading all meetings of the General Body and the Apex Council. He will also join the select group authorized to sign the BCCI’s audited annual accounts and other key financial documents.

Roger Binny Appointed as the 36th President of the BCCI in 2022

Roger Binny was appointed as the 36th president of the BCCI in October 2022, succeeding Sourav Ganguly after his three-year term. During his tenure, India achieved significant success by winning two major white-ball tournaments.

The Men in Blue won the ICC T20 World Cup in 2024 and the ICC Champions Trophy in 2025. Binny also played a key role in launching the Women's Premier League (WPL). He also focused on strengthening domestic cricket through improved incentives, better pay, and prioritizing domestic tournaments.

Binny represented India in 27 Test matches and 72 One-Day Internationals. He took 47 wickets and scored 830 runs in Tests, including five half-centuries. Binny picked up 77 wickets in ODIs and scored 629 runs with one half-century.
