Legal US Poker Sites, a review platform for online poker, completed a study to find out which states' residents gamble the most.
The website analyzed four factors in each state, including the search volume for gambling-related terms in the past year, the total number of casinos, the estimated average amount spent on gambling per person, and the estimated average percentage of income spent on gambling.
The report, released this month, analyzed statistics from sources such as the American Gaming Association and U.S. Census Bureau. After investigating the data, each state was given a score out of 100, with a higher score representing a higher interest in gambling.
The study found that Ohio is the state where gambling was the fourth-most popular, earning an score of 26.84. Ohio had the second-highest number of gambling searches at 70,687, the report found.
“Another late adopter of gambling, only legalizing it in 2009, Ohio, continues the trend of states seeing rapid gambling growth in our top ten by claiming the fourth spot in the rankings,” the study said.
Taking the No. 1 spot was Nevada to “no one’s surprise,” the website stated. The state is home to Las Vegas, which has the largest concentration of casinos of any city in the country. Nevada earned a score of 94.9, a score at least three times higher than any other state.
Coming in second place was Pennsylvania with a score of 31.26, followed by New York in third place (27.6) and Illinois in fifth place (24.4).
