As Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. enters his second year in the NFL, questions linger if he can take a giant leap in his sophomore season.
Harrison’ stats in his rookie season were somewhat underwhelming when you factor in the numbers he had at Ohio State and the expectations he had after being drafted by the Cardinals with the No. 4 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.
NFL.com’s Jeffri Chadiha listed Harrison as a candidate that could change the trajectory for the Cardinals next season. He noted that Harrison’s expectations in his rookie season played a part when discussing Harrison’s first year in the NFL.
Harrison produced a solid rookie season with the Cardinals, finishing with 62 receptions for 885 yards and eight touchdowns. Unfortunately for him, he suffered from the same issues that haunted Caleb Williams: The expectations were much higher for him when he entered the league. Some people talked about Harrison as if the Cardinals had just found their next Larry Fitzgerald when he became the fourth overall pick in last year’s draft, a foundational receiver who would dominate for years to come.
Harrison’s stats in 2024 could look underwhelming, especially when you compare them to other rookies in the NFL last season.

Los Angeles Chargers receiver Ladd McConkey, who was taken in the second round of last year’s NFL draft, registered more receptions (82) and receiving yards (1,149) than Harrison did in 2024.
While Harrison’s eight touchdowns was second among rookies, the Jacksonville Jaguars’ Brian Thomas Jr. and New York Giants’ Malik Nabers registered more receptions and yards than Harrison.
Chadiha added that Harrison still has time to live up to expectations and that he showed flashes in plenty of games last season to indicate he can still be a top receiver in the NFL.
Harrison still has ample time to deliver on his potential, and a breakout season this fall would make the Cardinals turn the corner on becoming playoff contenders. Harrison displayed flashes of what he could become at multiple times last year (including a 130-yard effort in a 41-10 win over the Rams and a 111-yard day in a comeback victory at Miami). He just needs to do more of that, which isn’t a ridiculous goal, now that he’s had a full offseason to work with quarterback Kyler Murray.
How does Marvin Harrison Jr. look going into 2025?
Harrison and the Cardinals head into 2025 looking to make the playoffs for the first time since 2021. The Cardinals were poised to make the playoffs in 2024 after a 6-4 start.
However, they lost four of their next five games and were eliminated from playoff contention after a Week 16 defeat to the Carolina Panthers.
A big part that could play a part in Harrison making a leap in Year 2 is getting more targets from Murray. While Harrison had the most targets on the team among receivers, he was second on the team with 116 targets behind Pro Bowl tight end Trey McBride’s 147.
