SEC athletic directors have plenty of opinions about the College Football Playoff, specifically how many teams should be in it — whether it’s 14 or 16.
While expansion seems to be a given, another question is regarding who exactly is selecting the teams in the field.
The Playoff committee welcomed a new chairperson, Baylor AD Mack Rhoades, in March, while former Michigan State head coach Mark Dantonio, Maryland AD Damon Evans, Middle Tennessee AD Chris Massaro, longtime college football writer Ivan Maisel, and former Ole Miss tight end Wesley Walls were brought in as new members alongside returnee Steve Wieberg.
Florida AD Scott Stricklin, a member of the selection committee from 2018 to 2021, feels that one is no longer needed.
“A committee is not ideal to choose a postseason,” Stricklin said at the SEC spring meetings in Destin. “I question whether it is appropriate for college football.”
Stricklin added that the process behind Playoff selection should be as neutral as possible, whatever form that ends up taking.
“Anything we can do to make the postseason more objective and less subjective is going to be better. Whether you could do that some other way than automatics? I don’t know, but I think that’s the goal,” he said.
