On one of the busiest travel days of the year, a pursuit shut down all lanes of Interstate 5 near state Route 56 in both directions Monday, creating gridlock in the Carmel Valley area and delays of up to two hours.

The closure began around noon after a miles-long pursuit that started in Imperial Beach, according to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department.

Deputies attempted to stop a Toyota Corolla for reckless driving around 10:30 a.m. The California Highway Patrol took over the chase near SeaWorld Drive at approximately 11:20 a.m.

Despite a spike strip deployed near the I-5/I-805 connector flattening the car’s tires, the suspect continued driving until CHP executed a PIT maneuver near SR-56, bringing the car to a stop, according to Fox5.

CHP used gas and other tactics to safely approach the car and detain the driver, who was allegedly under the influence, Fox5 reported. He was later taken to a hospital for treatment. No information was immediately available regarding his injuries.

Southbound lanes reopened around 1 p.m. and northbound lanes followed about 30 minutes later, according to Caltrans.
