Pierre Gasly, Alpine (Retired, lap 8): 2/10
Alpine had no pace around the Monaco streets, as exemplified by Gasly failing to make it out of Q1 during qualifying on Saturday. Starting near the foot of the field, the Frenchman opted to pit for fresh hard tyres at the end of the opening lap to get one of his two mandatory stops out of the way. It may have been a good strategy, but we could never know for sure as he destroyed his front suspension in a collision with Red Bull’s Tsunoda on the eighth tour.
Fernando Alonso, Aston Martin (Retired, lap 37): 6/10
Alonso cemented his “unluckiest man in the world” status by retiring from the Monaco Grand Prix whilst in a points-paying position. He had done everything right up until that point, placing his underpowered Aston Martin into sixth on the starting grid and looking set for seventh and six valuable points, but a power unit failure on lap 37 means the veteran Spaniard is still yet to score points. No one deserves some luck more than Alonso right now.
