12 killed and cities in flames after largest Russian air attack of the war

At least 12 people were killed in the largest Russian air attack of the war that struck dozens of cities and villages across Ukraine overnight, Kyiv said on Sunday.

The barrage included 69 missiles of different types and 298 drones, according to Yuri Ihnat, spokesperson for Ukraine’s Air Force.

It was “the most massive strike in terms of the number of air attack weapons on the territory of Ukraine since the beginning of the full-scale invasion in 2022,” he said.

Ukrainian authorities said 12 people were killed and at least 60 were injured in attacks on more than 30 cities and villages in the regions of Kyiv, Zhytomyr, Khmelnytskyi, Ternopil, Chernihiv, Sumy, Odesa, Poltava, Dnipro, Mykolaiv, Kharkiv and Cherkasy.

“This was a combined, ruthless strike aimed at civilians,” said Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko. “The enemy once again showed that its goal is fear and death.”

The death toll included three children from the same family in the Zhytomyr, he said.

At least four people were killed in the capital city Kyiv, local authorities said.

Ukraine’s emergency services published images of firefighters tackling blazes at locations around the country in the aftermath of the barrage.

Russia’s defence ministry said its forces had “launched a massive strike with high-precision sea, air and ground-based weapons and unmanned aerial vehicles on enterprises of the Ukrainian military-industrial complex.”

“The strike objectives have been achieved. All designated targets have been destroyed,” the ministry claimed.

Moscow further claimed that its air defences had shot down 110 Ukrainian drones overnight.

Volodymyr Zelensky called for new sanctions on Russia to force an end to the war, as ceasefire talks stalled.

“The war can be stopped, but only through the necessary force of pressure on Russia. Putin must be forced to think not about launching missiles, but about ending the war,” he said.

Ukraine and its allies were disappointed earlier this week when Donald Trump declined to impose sanctions on Russia despite threats to do so if Moscow did not show willingness to agree to a ceasefire.

The first direct talks between Russia and Ukraine in Istanbul last week did not produce a truce deal. But they did agree to the largest prisoner exchange of the war of 1,000 soldiers, which was completed on Sunday.

The sides exchanged 303 soldiers today, after exchanging 307 on Saturday and 390 on Friday.

“Congratulations to both sides on this negotiation. This could lead to something big???” Trump posted on social media on Friday.
