Charlotte man missing since 2016 found dead at Lexington scrapyard; case considered homicide: CMPD

CHARLOTTE/LEXINGTON, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) -- A man's disappearance is now considered a homicide, the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department announced on Wednesday.

On Tuesday, May 31, 2016, Lee Anthony Funderburk, 53, was reported missing from Clairemore Place in north Charlotte. Since his disappearance, detectives have continued to follow leads.

    On Wednesday, May 14, 2025, the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office got a call that an employee at a scrapyard in Lexington had found skeletal remains in a car.

    The DCSO and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) processed the scene and discovered that the vehicle was registered to Mattie Mae Funderburk, the mother of Lee Funderburk.

    The remains were later confirmed to be Lee Funderburk, and his death is being considered a homicide
