Def Leppard guitarist Vivian Campbell made an epic comeback during the band’s Thursday, May 15 performance at the Coliseo de Puerto Rico José Miguel Agrelot in San Juan.
Campbell, who was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 2013, played his first show with the U.K. rockers since undergoing a bone marrow transplant eight months ago.
Def Leppard, consisting of Joe Elliot, Phil Collen, Rick Savage, Rick Allen, and Campbell, was formed in 1977 in Sheffield, England.
Elliot, 65, and Savage, 64, are the only original members to date. Allen, 61, joined in 1978, Collen, 67, joined in 1982, and Campbell joined in 1992.

Though Campbell came in decades later, the guitarist is an integral part of the band’s sound. He worked on key albums like Adrenalize, Slang, Euphoria, X, Songs from the Sparkle Lounge, Def Leppard, and Diamond Star Halos.
Despite his ongoing health struggles, Campbell finds solace in music.
“Even at the worst of my cancer, when I was doing very hardcore chemotherapy, I still managed to go on tour with Def Leppard,” he told Ultimate Guitar in a 2019 interview. “I had a hard time convincing Def Leppard—and in particular the Def Leppard management at the time—that that was the best thing for me to do.”
Campbell continued, “I think that they really wanted me to stay at home and just concentrate on my treatments. Whereas for me, I would have considered that a death sentence. You are what you do in life. I’ve always been a guitar player, I’ve always been a musician, and nothing brings me more joy.”
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee will be on tour with Def Leppard through the end of August, along with Extreme, Bret Michaels, and the Struts.
