Northern Colorado’s Jerome Campbell set a Big Sky Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championship meet record in the 110-meter hurdles Friday to advance to the finals at Sacramento State University.
Campbell ran a season-best 13.43 seconds in a preliminary race at Hornet Stadium in Sacramento, California — beating the heat’s second-place finisher, Tyson Givens of Northern Arizona, by almost one second. Givens ran 14.27 seconds in the seven-man heat.
Campbell qualified with the fastest time for Saturday’s eight-man final. The final is scheduled for 1:55 p.m. Saturday, which is the final day of the four-day meet.
Campbell also qualified for Saturday’s 100-meter final with the fastest time preliminary time. Campbell ran 10.25 seconds in one of four heats Friday evening. The 100-meter final is scheduled for 2:35 p.m. Saturday.
University of Northern Colorado track and field long jumper Kiana Van Haaren competes in an invitational at Colorado State in late March 2025 in Fort Collins. Van Haaren, a junior from Texas, set a UNC record with a jump of 20-5 3/4 (6.24 meters) Friday, April 18 to win the event at the Oregon Open at the University of Oregon. In April, Van Haaren, a junior from Texas, set a UNC record with a jump of 20-5 3/4 (6.24 meters) at the University of Oregon.
In the men’s 110-meter hurdles, Madhvendra Shekhawat of Eastern Washington ran the second fastest preliminary time in 14.13 seconds. Zachary Winger of Sacramento State qualified third at 141.14 seconds.
Campbell’s preliminary time was also the 11th best time in Division I this year. Campbell’s personal-best time in the 110 hurdles is 13.30 seconds, set in May 2024 at an NCAA regional qualifying meet.
From there, Campbell advanced to the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships at the University of Oregon. He finished seventh at Oregon’s famed Hayward Field with a time of 13.49 seconds.
UNC’s Edgar Garcia will join Campbell in the 100-meter final after running a season-best time of 10.47 seconds Friday in a preliminary race. Garcia, a junior from Byers, qualified for the final with third fastest time of the day.
Moise Bennett will also run in the 110-meter finals for UNC. He qualified in the eighth spot Friday with a time of 14.81 seconds.
Earlier in the meet, UNC’s Ryan Pollyea and Jameson Rembert finished ninth and 10th, respectively, in the 13-man decathlon field.
Ciara Piffarerio finished 13th of 14 athletes in the women’s heptathlon.
