A rock legend who is in the late stages of Alzheimer's disease is being honored with a documentary film that debuts June 6 at the IFC Center in New York City.
Garland Jeffreys, 81, has had a storied 50-year career in rock and roll, exploring all manner of genres. Now his wife and filmmaker, Claire Jeffreys, is releasing Garland Jeffreys: The King of In Between, which she produced and directed. Steven Van Zandt of Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band is a co-executive producer on the project along with his wife, Maureen Van Zandt, Danny Zelisko, Kathleen Lavelle and Bill Tureby.
"Hubris, anger, prejudice…doo-wop, reggae, rock…expectations, heartbreak, transformation…Garland Jeffreys: The King of In Between examines the fifty-year career of this genre-bending, biracial singer-songwriter. An enigmatic performer since his start in the Greenwich Village clubs, Jeffreys never quite reached the success predicted for him. The film asks why, and explores how his commitment to writing about race in America is more relevant now than ever," reads the press release.
It continues, "Sadly, since beginning the film, Garland has been suffering from Alzheimer’s Disease and is now in the final stages. This truly makes the film stand as his legacy."
Claire Jeffreys' initial goal with this project was to have "a larger audience come to appreciate him as his devoted fans already do, and to bring his body of work the recognition she’d long believed it deserved."
Now, she hopes that people will come away with "a respect not only for Garland's hard-won success, but with a desire to embrace their own levels of achievement in any sphere, not just as artists, but as human beings."
“I've been Garland’s partner for more than 40 years. Many fans and friends have told me about turning people on to his music — and can't believe they’ve never heard of him. I decided to make this film not only to bring Garland to a wider audience, but also because it seems the world has finally caught up to his commitment to examining issues of race and social justice in his songs. He belongs in the conversation. His perseverance will inspire people everywhere," said Claire in a statement.
Jeffreys' best-known hits include "Reelin'", "Matador," "96 Tears" and "Wild in the Streets."
