NFL veteran Derek Carr has announced his shock retirement.
The New Orleans Saints quarterback has hung up his cleats due to injury.
Carr sustained a problem in his right shoulder in March and scans have revealed he has suffered a “significant degenerative changes to his rotator cuff.”
Following crunch talks over his future with the Saints and his wife Heather, the 34-year-old has decided to call it a day on his career as surgery would not guarantee a full recovery.
Carr said in a statement: “For more than 11 years, we have been incredibly blessed, and we are forever grateful and humbled by this experience.
“It’s difficult to find the right words to express our thanks to all the teammates, coaches, management, ownership, team officials and especially the fans who made this journey so special. Your unwavering support has meant the world to us.
“Through it all, I gave this game everything I had every day. I sleep well knowing that I gave my teammates, my coaches and my cities my all.
“Now, I look forward to whatever God has next and I’ll pursue it with the same fire I brought to the field. God bless and see you soon.”
Carr has been an NFL player for 11 seasons and he made the Pro Bowl four times.
He played for the Oakland/Las Vegas Raiders for eight years before moving to the Saints as a free agent in 2023.
Other recent injuries saw him miss seven games last season after going 14-13 as a starter.
Carr has earned $195m during his career and was three years into his four-year $150m contract.
Saints head coach Kellen Moore is ready to let his three alternatives Tyler Shough, Spencer Rattler and Jake Haener fight for a starting quarterback place.
