Skanska USA has pioneered the use of low-power explosives to mine a tunnel under busy Grand Central 42nd Street Station in New York City.
The $74.2m project for the Construction & Development agency of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) opened up a new exit off the station’s busy Flushing Line No. 7 platform so passengers can transfer faster to the Lexington Avenue lines.
The aim was to reduce congestion and improve passenger flow in a system dating back to the early 20th Century.
